5 Nearest Named Colors
About this tool
Color Name Finder
Color Name Finder identifies the closest CSS named colour to any hex value and lists the five nearest matches.
How to use it
- Enter a hex value or use the picker.
- Read the closest CSS named colour and the four runners-up.
- Click a name to copy it.
How closest is decided
Each of the 148 CSS named colours is a fixed RGB point. Finding the closest means measuring distance between your colour and each of them, and the choice of distance measure changes the answer.
Straight RGB distance is easy and does not match how people see. Two colours the same numerical distance apart can look very different, because the eye is far more sensitive to green than to blue. Perceptual colour spaces exist precisely to fix that, which is why a nearest-name result sometimes looks off even though the arithmetic is right.
When it helps
- Finding a memorable name for a colour you are using.
- Checking whether a hex value is close to a standard named colour.
- Writing more readable CSS for common colours.
- Describing a colour to someone without giving them a hex code.
Common mistakes
- Substituting the named colour for your exact value. Closest is not identical, and brand colours need to be exact.
- Assuming CSS colour names are intuitive. Several are historically odd, and both gray and grey are valid spellings.
