About this tool

Currency Converter

Currency Converter converts between more than thirty world currencies using a built-in rate table, with a quick view of one US dollar against every supported currency.

How to use it

  1. Enter an amount.
  2. Choose the source and target currencies, or use the swap button to reverse them.
  3. Read the converted amount, or use the quick convert view for a full comparison.

Why exchange rates are never one number

There is no single true exchange rate. The mid-market rate is the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are offering, and it is the figure quoted in news reports. It is not the rate you will get.

Banks, card networks and exchange bureaux all add a margin, typically anywhere from under one percent to several percent, and some add a fixed fee as well. The mid-market rate is the benchmark to measure an offer against, not a prediction of what you will receive.

When it helps

  • Getting a quick sense of what a foreign price is worth.
  • Checking a quoted exchange rate against the benchmark to see the margin.
  • Comparing prices across countries when shopping online.
  • Estimating a travel budget.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting to receive the quoted rate. Every provider takes a margin somewhere.
  • Comparing providers on rate alone while ignoring a fixed transfer fee, which dominates on small amounts.
  • Using card conversion at the point of sale when offered the choice. Paying in the local currency is almost always cheaper than letting the terminal convert.

What this tool handles

  • Uses a built-in rate table rather than a live feed, so figures are indicative and will drift from the market. Check a live source before making a financial decision.
