About this tool
Interview Answer Timer
Interview Timer helps you practise timed answers, with target durations for different question types.
How to use it
- Set the target duration for the question type.
- Start and answer aloud.
- Check whether you landed near the target.
Why length is a real skill
Most interview answers should run between one and two minutes. Under thirty seconds usually reads as unprepared or evasive. Past three minutes the interviewer has stopped listening and started waiting, which costs you regardless of the content.
Behavioural answers in particular benefit from a structure that fits the time: situation, task, action, result, with the majority of the time on the action and the result. Practising against a clock is what turns that structure into something you can actually deliver under pressure.
When it helps
- Practising answers to a length you can sustain under pressure.
- Finding which of your prepared answers run long.
- Rehearsing a two-minute introduction.
- Training the instinct to stop when the point is made.
Common mistakes
- Memorising a script to hit a time. It sounds rehearsed and falls apart when the question is phrased differently.
- Practising silently. Speaking aloud takes noticeably longer than reading in your head.
- Optimising only for length. A tight answer to the wrong question is still the wrong answer.
