About this tool

Life Stats Calculator

Life Stats calculates how many heartbeats, breaths, full moons and other recurring events you have lived through, from your date of birth.

How to use it

  1. Enter your birth date.
  2. Read the accumulated totals.

How the estimates are built

Each figure is a rate multiplied by elapsed time. A resting heart rate around 70 beats per minute gives roughly 100,000 beats a day and about 36 million a year. Breathing at around 15 a minute gives roughly 8 million a year.

Full moons are exact rather than estimated: the lunar cycle is 29.53 days, so there are about 12.4 per year. That is why some calendar years contain thirteen, producing what people call a blue moon.

Worked example

Where the totals come from:

  • Resting heart rateabout 70 per minute
  • Per dayabout 100,000 beats
  • Per yearabout 36 million

Result: Small rates accumulate into numbers that are hard to picture, which is the point of the tool.

When it helps

  • Putting the scale of ordinary bodily processes in perspective.
  • A conversation piece or a birthday curiosity.
  • Understanding how large numbers accumulate from small rates.
  • Explaining rates and elapsed time to a child.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the heart and breath figures as measurements. They are averages, and your actual rates vary constantly with activity and sleep.
  • Comparing your numbers to someone else's as though they meant something. They are functions of age.
