About this tool
List Randomizer
List Randomizer shuffles a list into a random order.
How to use it
- Paste your list.
- Shuffle it.
- Copy the randomised order.
Shuffling properly is harder than it looks
The correct method is the Fisher-Yates shuffle: walk the list from the end, and swap each item with a randomly chosen item at or before its position. It produces every possible ordering with equal probability, in a single pass.
The obvious alternative, sorting by a random comparison, is subtly and badly wrong. It produces a biased distribution where some orderings are far more likely than others, and it is one of the most widely repeated bugs in shuffle implementations.
Worked example
Why sorting by a random comparator is not a shuffle:
- Fisher-Yatesevery ordering equally likely
- Random comparator sortsome orderings far more likely
- Looks correctyes, which is why the bug persists
Result: Both produce a jumbled list. Only one is actually uniform.
When it helps
- Randomising a running order or a playlist.
- Assigning an order to participants fairly.
- Shuffling questions for a quiz.
- Randomising a list before splitting it into groups.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a shuffled list looks random. Real shuffles produce apparent clusters, and a result that looks too evenly spread is more suspicious than one that does not.
- Shuffling repeatedly to get an order you prefer, which discards the fairness you shuffled for.
