Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
The text is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. It has been used as typesetting filler since at least the 1500s, when a printer scrambled a passage to make a type specimen book.
It survives because it is deliberately meaningless. Readable placeholder text pulls attention to the words, and a client reviewing a layout starts editing the copy instead of assessing the design. Latin-looking nonsense with roughly English word-length distribution keeps the focus on the layout.
When it helps
- Filling a design mockup before real copy exists.
- Testing how a layout handles different text lengths.
- Checking line height, measure and typography with realistic word shapes.
- Populating a database or a template for testing.
Common mistakes
- Shipping it to production. Lorem ipsum appearing on a live site is a classic and very visible mistake.
- Using it to test text that will be much shorter or longer in reality, which hides layout problems until launch.
- Forgetting it is Latin-shaped. If your real content is in a language with much longer words or a different script, it will not stress the layout the same way.
