About this tool
Net Worth Tracker
Net Worth Tracker adds up what you own and subtracts what you owe. Enter assets and liabilities with your own labels and it keeps a running total, entirely in your browser.
How to use it
- Add each asset with a name and a value.
- Add each liability the same way.
- Read the net worth figure, which updates as you go.
What counts on each side
Net worth is assets minus liabilities. Assets are things you own that have value: cash, savings, investments, retirement accounts, property, vehicles. Liabilities are what you owe: mortgage, car loans, student loans, credit card balances.
A house belongs on both sides. The property's market value is an asset and the outstanding mortgage is a liability. Listing only one of the two is the most common way people get a wildly wrong figure.
When it helps
- Getting a single number for your financial position rather than a scatter of account balances.
- Tracking progress over time, which matters more than any single snapshot.
- Seeing the effect of paying down debt versus saving.
- Preparing figures before a mortgage or loan application.
Common mistakes
- Valuing assets optimistically. Use what something would actually sell for, not what you paid or hope to get.
- Forgetting depreciating assets. A car loses value every year and the loan does not shrink as fast.
- Panicking at a negative number. Early in a career, with student debt and no equity, negative net worth is normal and temporary.
What this tool handles
- Everything stays in your browser. No account, no upload, and nothing is transmitted anywhere.
