About this tool

Number to Words Converter

Number to Words converts numbers into written English, in standard, currency and ordinal formats.

How to use it

  1. Enter a number.
  2. Choose standard, currency or ordinal.
  3. Copy the written form.

Short scale and long scale

English-speaking countries use the short scale, where a billion is a thousand million. Much of continental Europe historically used the long scale, where a billion is a million million and the thousand-million is a milliard. The difference is a factor of a thousand and it is not hypothetical.

Currency format has its own conventions, most notably writing cents as a fraction over 100 on cheques, which exists specifically to make alteration harder.

When it helps

  • Writing an amount on a cheque.
  • Producing the written form for a contract or a legal document.
  • Generating ordinals for dates and rankings.
  • Checking how a large number is properly written.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming billion means the same thing everywhere. In international contexts it is safer to write the figure.
  • Forgetting the hyphens. Twenty-one and thirty-five are hyphenated; one hundred is not.
  • Using and inconsistently. British English writes one hundred and one, American English usually omits the and.
