Pace Calculator

Enter any two of the three values and calculate the third. Time format: H:MM:SS or M:SS.

About this tool

Pace Calculator

Pace Calculator solves for running or walking pace, distance, or time. Enter any two and it produces the third.

How to use it

  1. Enter any two of distance, time and pace.
  2. The third is calculated for you.
  3. Time accepts H:MM:SS or M:SS format.

Pace and speed are inverses

Pace is time per unit distance, usually minutes per mile or per kilometre. Speed is distance per unit time. They describe the same thing inverted, which is why a faster pace is a smaller number while a faster speed is a larger one.

That inversion is why pace improvements get harder. Going from 10:00 to 9:00 per mile saves 60 seconds. Going from 6:00 to 5:00 saves the same minute but demands a far larger jump in speed.

Worked example

Working out a marathon finish:

  • Distance26.2 miles
  • Pace9:00 per mile

Result: About 3 hours 55 minutes, which is why 9:00 pace is a common target for runners chasing a sub-four marathon.

When it helps

  • Working out the pace needed to hit a goal finish time.
  • Converting a training pace between miles and kilometres.
  • Predicting a race time from a training pace.
  • Checking splits during planning.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming race pace equals training pace. Most training should be slower than race pace, not equal to it.
  • Planning even splits on a hilly course, where effort matters more than pace.
  • Converting between miles and kilometres by rough approximation, which compounds badly over a long distance.
