About this tool
Rain Simulator
Rain Simulator produces animated rain with matching sound, with sliders for rain density, wind and lightning frequency.
How to use it
- Adjust the density slider for light drizzle through heavy downpour.
- Add wind to angle the rain.
- Set the lightning frequency, or turn it off.
Why rain works as background sound
Rain is close to pink noise: broadband, steady, and with power falling as frequency rises. That combination masks intermittent sounds well without the harshness of pure white noise.
The steadiness is what matters. A sound that does not change gets ignored by the brain quickly, while an intermittent noise such as a conversation or a door keeps pulling attention back. Rain covers those without becoming a distraction itself.
Worked example
Why steady sound masks better than silence:
- Silenceevery noise stands out
- Intermittent noisekeeps pulling attention
- Steady broadband soundignored within minutes
Result: Rain covers interruptions without becoming one itself.
When it helps
- Background ambience for focus or relaxation.
- Masking household noise without wearing headphones.
- A calming backdrop for reading or winding down.
- Sound for a break, without an app or an account.
Common mistakes
- Turning lightning up high while trying to concentrate. Sudden flashes are exactly the kind of interruption ambience is meant to prevent.
- Playing at high volume for long periods.
