About this tool
Random Picker
Random Picker selects one item at random from a pasted list.
How to use it
- Paste your options, one per line.
- Pick, and read the selected item.
What random selection guarantees
Each item has an equal chance of being picked, independent of what was picked before. That independence is the point: it is what makes the choice defensible when people might otherwise argue about the process.
It also means repeats are normal. Picking the same option twice in a row is not evidence of a broken generator, and over enough picks it would be suspicious if it never happened.
Worked example
Why repeats are expected:
- Options4
- Chance of the same pick twice running1 in 4
- Over 20 picksa repeat is near certain
Result: A repeat is evidence the picker is working, not that it is broken.
When it helps
- Choosing a winner from a list of entrants.
- Picking who goes first.
- Deciding between options when the difference genuinely does not matter.
- Selecting a random sample from a list.
Common mistakes
- Re-rolling until you like the answer, which makes the process decorative rather than random.
- Expecting no repeats across multiple picks. Without removal, repeats are expected.
- Using randomness for a decision that deserves thought. Randomness is for when the options are genuinely equivalent.
