About this tool

Reading Time Calculator

Reading Time Calculator estimates how long a piece takes to read, with an adjustable reading speed so you can model a fast skim or a careful read.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text.
  2. Set the reading speed in words per minute.
  3. Read the estimated time.

Choosing a words-per-minute figure

Reading time is the word count divided by a words-per-minute rate. The whole estimate hinges on which rate you pick, which is why the tool lets you change it rather than hiding a fixed assumption.

Adult silent reading of general prose runs about 200 to 250 words per minute. Careful reading of technical material is much slower, often 100 to 150. Reading aloud is slower still, around 130 to 150, which is the figure to use for a script or a speech.

Worked example

A 1,500 word article at different rates:

  • Skimming (300 wpm)5 minutes
  • Average silent reading (238 wpm)about 6.3 minutes
  • Reading aloud (140 wpm)about 10.7 minutes

Result: The same text is a 5 minute read or an 11 minute talk depending entirely on the rate you assume.

When it helps

  • Adding an honest reading time estimate to an article.
  • Timing a speech or a video script before you record it.
  • Checking whether a document fits the attention you can realistically expect.
  • Planning how much material a training session needs.

Common mistakes

  • Using a silent reading rate for a script. Speaking is much slower and the estimate will be badly short.
  • Ignoring figures, tables and code. Readers slow right down or stop at them, and word count does not capture that.
