About this tool

Tic Tac Toe

Tic Tac Toe plays against an unbeatable computer opponent or a second player, with score tracking.

How to use it

  1. Choose single player or two player.
  2. Take turns placing your mark.
  3. Get three in a row to win.

A solved game

Tic tac toe is solved, meaning the outcome with perfect play from both sides is known: it is always a draw. The unbeatable opponent uses that. It will never lose, and it will win only if you make a mistake.

The strategy fits in a few rules. Take a win if available, block the opponent's win if not, then take the centre, then a corner, then an edge. The centre is the strongest opening square because it sits on four of the eight winning lines, while a corner sits on three and an edge only two.

When it helps

  • A quick game against a real opponent or the computer.
  • Teaching a child their first strategy game.
  • Demonstrating what a solved game means.
  • Learning why the centre square matters.

Common mistakes

  • Opening on an edge, which is the weakest first move.
  • Chasing your own three in a row while ignoring the opponent's.
  • Expecting to beat perfect play. A draw is the best result available.
