About this tool
Word Scramble
Word Scramble randomly rearranges the letters of words or a whole list, for games, puzzles and classroom activities.
How to use it
- Enter your words, one per line.
- Scramble them.
- Copy the result.
What makes a scramble solvable
Scrambling shuffles the letters within each word. Difficulty depends less on word length than on letter combinations: a scramble that accidentally leaves a recognisable cluster like -ing or th- intact is far easier to solve.
Short words can be harder than long ones, because a long word constrains the possibilities more. There are only so many seven-letter arrangements that are English words, while three letters could be several.
Worked example
Why short can be harder than long:
- Three lettersfew constraints, many possibilities
- Seven lettersheavily constrained by English spelling
- Accidental clusterleaving -ing intact makes it much easier
Result: Length is a poor proxy for difficulty; letter combinations matter more.
When it helps
- Making a word puzzle for a class or a party.
- Vocabulary or spelling practice.
- Creating a puzzle for a newsletter or a card.
- Testing an anagram solver.
Common mistakes
- Not checking the output. A shuffle can occasionally return the original word unchanged.
- Scrambling proper nouns without a hint, which makes them nearly unsolvable.
- Assuming longer means harder. Often it means easier.
